Fix passwords via regular changes

In this modern age where people place implicit trust on transactions that occur in the cyber space, passwords play a very pivotal role. We have all heard the timeless tale of ‘Ali Baba and the forty thieves’ and the famous phrase ‘Open Sesame’, the password that when uttered opened the cave to immense riches. What makes the tale of Ali Baba timeless is that the title of this article, ‘Fix passwords via regular changes’ even though mentioned under a modern context, can be used as a moral for the story of Ali Baba as well. The
thieves would have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they had changed the password regularly. On a more serious note, in a world where the only shield between sensitive information and hackers consists of a few letters and numbers, passwords assume paramount importance.

We all use passwords for our emails, social networks, bank transactions, online purchases and so on. But not many of us realise the danger posed by a group of people that are always on the prowl across the internet, trying to hack into the accounts for all kinds of nefarious activities. There have been many occasions where accounts have been hacked and funds transferred without the account holder even being aware for weeks. Social networking accounts have also been hacked into. This is a very serious issue that needs to be given a lot of importance. The best way to deal with the issue is to pay considerable amount of attention to the creation of passwords.

It is likely that you have several accounts that need to be accessed using passwords. There may be many people who, for the sake of convenience, use one single password for everything. They may use the same password for Face Book, email, net banking and so on. It may be convenient but it poses a great security risk. Imagine what would happen if a hacker hacks into one account, it would make it easy for him to hack into every other account and that is a rather scary scenario. So the first thing to do would be to use a different password for every other account. There are sites that support two-step authentication. It is very difficult to hack into a user’s account because there will be an app on the user’s phone of the account that changes the second authentication password periodically.

Another step that can be taken is to change the password frequently. If you change your password every week, you reduce the risk of hackers repeatedly logging into your account without you knowing. After repeated attempts they are likely to abandon their efforts at trying to hack your account. But make sure that you do not use the same set of password changes for all your accounts. Date of births, star signs, names of the user, vehicle registration numbers etc are not advisable as passwords as they can be easily guessed.  Try to use a combination of letters and numbers in alternating order. Also do remember to continuously change them.

Password managers are also used by some users and they are convenient. But they also operate on passwords and they can also be hacked into very easily. Once these password managers are hacked into it will be possible for hackers to gain access to several accounts. While creating passwords just remember that the longer the password the more difficult it is to hack. Use letters and characters as well. Change your password frequently and always have different passwords for the different accounts that you have. If these steps are followed the possibility of any of your accounts getting hacked can be minimised to a great extent.
